Research in the USA No rush of US scientists at universities in the country

After research and universities were also affected by budget cuts in the United States, some expected US scientists to emigrate. There were also cooperations – just a different kind.

Universities and research institutions in Saxony-Anhalt are currently not experiencing higher demand from US scientists. This was the result of a survey by the German Press Agency among universities and universities in the country. Only at the Anhalt University of Applied Sciences there is currently an appeal procedure with a scientist from the United States, a spokeswoman said.

After the take office of US President Donald Trump, the government had also announced cuts in university promotions. Three renowned scientists from the US University of Yale then announced in spring to leave the United States. The liberal thought factory “Center for American Progress” presented an investigation last month that the Trump government has targeted more than 4,000 research grants. It was about cuts between 3.3 and 3.7 billion US dollars.

Willingmann: “Understandable that scientists are reoriented”

The possible interest of American scientists was also a topic in the past university round of Science Minister Armin Willingmann (SPD) with the university lines. There are only isolated, rather informal inquiries, the Ministry said. However, the topic is virulent in the science landscape, also because of the unpredictable science policy of the Trump government.

However, a separate program for recruiting American scientists is not planned. With most federal states, there is agreement that it makes little sense if individual countries tried to put on corresponding programs. “As an attractive and free science location, Saxony -Anhalt has the potential to attract international top researchers,” said Willingmann. “With a view to scandalous science policy since the Trump government started, it is only understandable that scientists are reoriented locally. We will provide help where necessary.” However, it cannot be the goal of specifically weakening the science systems of partner countries.
