The US specialist Steve Witkoff and the son-in-law of US President Donald Trump, Jared Kushner, also arrive according to the Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty. A Turkish delegation around secret service chief Ibrahim Kalin also follows the talks, as the Turkish news agency Anadolu reported.
Israel and the radical Islamic Hamas have had indirect discussions about a plan to end the Gaza War since Monday with Egypt, Qatar and the United States. The US President’s proposal provides for the release of all hostages captured by Hamas, the disarmament of Hamas and a gradual withdrawal of the Israeli army from the Gaza Strip.
According to the plan, Hamas will no longer play a role in the administration of the Gaza Strip. However, the Islamist Palestinian organization insists on a say; it has not yet responded to the demand for its complete disarmament. The chief negotiator of Hamas, Chalil Al-Hajja, asked Trump and the intermediaries “guarantees” for an end to the war in the Gaza Strip on Tuesday.
The US President said that there is the possibility “that we can reach peace in the Middle East”. In the event of a ceasefire, the United States would “do everything in its power to ensure that everyone adheres to the agreement,” emphasized Trump in the White House on Tuesday.
The Gaza War had been triggered by the brutal attack by Hamas and with it allied Palestinian groups on Israel on October 7, 2023. Since then, Israel has massively militarily accomplished in the Gaza Strip.
On the second anniversary of the Hamas attack, thousands of people reminded of the victims of the attack on Tuesday evening in Tel Aviv. The memorial event had been organized by the families of the Hamas Geiseln.
