PARIS.- The Spanish Carlos Alcaraznumber 2 in the world, imposed his hierarchy against the Chilean Nicolás Jarry (37th), whom he defeated this Tuesday in the second round of the Paris Masters 1000.
The Murcian tennis player, the main favorite to win what would be his first title in Bercy after the Italian’s absence due to an “intestinal virus” Jannik Sinner (N.1), won 7-5 and 6-1 over Jarry, who had eliminated the Italian Lorenzo Sonego in his debut on Monday.
Now Alcaraz, exempt in the first round, awaits a rival for the round of 16, which will come from the duel between the Frenchman Ugo Humbert (18th) and the American Marcos Girón (49th).
Hours earlier, the Argentine Francisco Cerúndolo, number 29 in the ATP ranking, eliminated the Russian Andrey Rublev (N.7) 7-6 (8/6), 7-6 (7/5) and advanced to the third round.
Cerúndolo, 29, will seek a place in the quarterfinals against the winner of the duel between the Chilean Alejandro Tabilo and the Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas.
Tuesday’s victory was the Argentine’s 100th victory on the professional circuit, against a rival from the ‘Top 10’ whom he has taken the measure of.
Cerúndolo dominates the head-to-head against Rublev 3-1, including two victories in 2024, the one on Tuesday and the one last July in Umag, a tournament that he ended up winning.
Also Argentine Mariano Navone (45th) said goodbye in his debut in the first round with the Australian Alex de Miñaur (10th), who won 7-5, 6-1.
