Coach of Ecuador leaves his position after elimination in the 2026 World Cup

The Argentine Sebastián Beccacece ended his time as coach of Ecuador after the elimination of La Tri in the round of 32 of the World Cup 2026where they fell 2-0 against Mexico. The coach explained that his contract concluded with the team’s participation in the World Cup, although he acknowledged that his desire was to continue leading the project that he started before the tournament.

In the press conference after the match, Beccacece described the elimination as “a sad, painful day and night for all the Ecuadorian people” and highlighted that the group of footballers had generated great enthusiasm among the fans. He also stated that during his management “a locker room of an extraordinary brotherhood” was built and expressed his gratitude to the players for the commitment shown.

Regarding the development of the match, the coach admitted Mexico’s superiority, especially in the first half, considering that his team was surpassed in the middle of the field and in the game. However, he appreciated Ecuador’s reaction in the second half and maintained that the result was too punishing for what was shown in that second half.

The elimination ended the World Cup campaign for Ecuador, which had advanced to the knockout phase after overcoming a first round in which it lost to Ivory Coast, drew with Curacao and achieved a key victory against Germany. After the game, winger John Yeboah acknowledged that the team was “devastated” by the defeat and highlighted the support that the Mexican team received from its fans at the Azteca stadium.
