LAUSANNE.- He International Olympic Committee will choose in 2029 the host of the Olympic Games 2036the next edition to be attributed, with a new procedure, announced on Wednesday Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovicwho chairs, within the IOC, the commission for the future host.
The Olympic body reintroduces a “calendar” with three stages, from confidential dialogue with the interested States to the final adjustments with one or more “preferred hosts”, as indicated by Grabar-Kitarovic in front of a hundred IOC members gathered in Lausanne in the 146th session.
Among the many challenges launched a year ago by the new patron of the IOC, Kirsty Conventrythis measure is the most tangible of those presented on Wednesday, and reforms the designation process followed to attribute the 2030, 2032 and 2034 editions.
These three editions were awarded with, respectively, six, eleven and ten years of margin, a variation due to a very flexible, highly confidential process in which the IOC session only intervened at the end to ratify the election of the executive commission.
Now, the “ongoing dialogue” with interested potential hosts can be continued away from the public eye, but, starting in March 2027, it will be followed by a “strategic dialogue” with a first selection of candidates, evaluated more closely and visited by the future host’s commission.
After this intermediate phase, “at the end of 2028” the executive committee will choose one or more “preferred hosts” – as is the case today – who must provide a series of guarantees and will then be able to tweak their candidacies, before a final vote of the session, which will be informed with a “complete report from the future host committee.”
