Venezuelan Salomón Rondón pursues another scoring title and a record in Mexico

MEXICO.- By dint of goals, the forward of the Pachuca, Salomón Rondónis heading towards a double feat: his second scoring title in Mexico and be the top Venezuelan scorer in the history of Mexican soccer, a record he holds Giancarlo Maldonado.

This year, “El Rey” Salomón recovered in Mexico the finesse in front of the goal that he lost on his loan with the Real Oviedo of Spain.

His stay in the Spanish league was brief and discreet: two goals in 16 games in the first round of the 2025-2026 season.

He returned to Mexico at the beginning of the year and in the current Apertura 2026, at 37 years old, he has admirable efficiency with 13 goals in 13 games, and leads the individual scoring table.

“He is on the right path to be able to win the scoring championship, I hope we can help him in the next games so that he can achieve it,” commented the Mexican. Benjamin Mora, coach of the Tuzos of Pachuca.

On Sunday, Pachuca will visit America in it Aztec Stadium for the fourteenth day of Apertura 2026.

The Eagles They lead the standings with 27 points and a game in hand.

Los Tuzos occupy 16th place in the standings with 13 points and their chances of qualifying for the final phase are very low.

With four dates remaining until the end of the regular phase, the incentive for the Tuzos is for their Venezuelan striker to win his second individual scoring title in Mexico.

He achieved the first in Clausura 2024, his first tournament in Mexico, with just eight goals.

In this Apertura 2026, the Venezuelan’s immediate pursuer in the scoring table is the Brazilian Juninhoof the pumas, with eight goals.

In the footsteps of “El Capo”

In five tournaments with the Tuzos del Pachuca, Rondón has accumulated 43 goals in the Mexican first division and is one away from equaling Maldonado’s mark.

“El Capo” Maldonado played for two clubs on the top Aztec circuit: Atlanteanwith whom he scored 42 goals, and the Atlas with just a couple.

His mark of 44 goals was established in the 2012 Clausura and could be equaled or surpassed by Rondón this weekend against América.

On the path to being the top Venezuelan scorer in Mexican soccer, Rondón is on a path similar to the one he took to be the top scorer for his country’s team.

In the Aztec league, Salomón first surpassed the 41 goals that the unforgettable left-hander accumulated Juan Arango and now he aims for Maldonado’s 44.

In the Red wine, Rondón first surpassed the 22 goals that Maldonado scored in 65 games and then left behind Arango’s 23 goals in 129 games.

Since his debut in the Llanera team in 2008, the “King” has scored 50 goals in 123 games.

Vizcarrondo left him out

Rondón has not played with Vinotinto since last March when he participated in a friendly against Uzbekistan.

The selector Oswaldo Vizcarrondo left him out of the friendly matches prior to the World Cup 2026 and relegated it again on the last date FIFA.

In September, Venezuela lost 2-1 to Japan and in October they drew goalless with South Korea and Jordan.

The fans missed “King” Salomón and demanded his return due to his scoring moment in Mexico.

Vizcarrondo acknowledged that Salomón left “a space that is difficult to fill,” but defended his project to rejuvenate the Venezuelan national team.

The coach assured that he would not hesitate to call him for official competitions when there are points in dispute.

“I hope he remains in force,” concluded Vizcarrondo.
