The Detroit Tigers and Venezuelan infielder Gleyber Torres They agreed to a one-year contract, the club announced on Friday.
The deal is worth $15 million, sources told ESPN’s Jesse Rogers.
Torres hit .257 with 15 home runs, 26 doubles and 63 RBIs in 154 games with the New York Yankees last season. The 28-year-old also contributed a pair of home runs, eight RBIs and a .745 OPS during New York’s run to the World Series.
Torres settled in at second base, but also has extensive experience at shortstop. The Tigers are currently projected to enter the 2025 season with Colt Keith at second base and Trey Sweeney playing shortstop. Detroit also has Javier Báez as an option at shortstop, but it is unclear if he will be ready for the start of the 2025 season after undergoing hip surgery in August.
Keith could slide to third base to make room for Torres after making 129 starts at the hot corner in the minors.
Torres spent the first seven seasons of his career with the Yankees. He is a two-time All-Star and owns a career .774 OPS with 138 home runs and 441 RBI in 888 games.
