Time is running out for Barcelona and they could lose their star

Dani Olmo may not be available for the rest of the campaign The Barcelona League after a court rejected the club’s request to extend the attacker’s registration beyond its current expiration of December 31.

The League made the decision from Barcelona’s Commercial Court No. 10. The Catalan club’s spending limit for the 2024-25 campaign is €426 million. La Liga will only allow its clubs to free up more space through transfer revenue, a reduction in their wage bill or by increasing revenue.

Barcelona filed an appeal with the court of first instance, according to Spanish reports broadcast by BBC Sport. The hearing would be set for Monday, which is one day before Olmo’s registration deadline.

Barcelona recently signed a new long-term kit deal with Nike, but that income is not enough to register Olmo, European press shows. Among the reported options being explored to ensure Olmo remains on the squad list for La Liga are the pre-sale of VIP seats at Camp Nou and a personal guarantee from a board member to allow registration.

This last route helped register Jules Kounde in 2022 and Joao Felix and Joao Cancelo in 2023.

Olmo, who joined from RB Leipzig for around €60 million last summer, was initially allowed a temporary registration until the end of the calendar year to cover a long-term injury to Andreas Christensen. Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo reported that Barcelona risk losing Olmo on a free transfer if he cannot be registered, but sources close to the player and the club said it is extremely unlikely.

Olmo scored five times in 11 La Liga appearances this season, while adding a goal and an assist in four Champions League outings.

Pau Victor is in the same situation as Olmo. The 23-year-old striker has made 17 appearances in all competitions, scoring twice and assisting once since joining Girona in the summer.
