US election: Trump agrees to TV debate with challenger Harris on September 4

In the US election campaign, the Republican candidate, Donald Trump, has agreed to a televised debate with the likely Democratic presidential candidate, Kamala Harris. “I have agreed with Fox News to debate Kamala Harris on Wednesday, September 4th,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform on Friday (local time). It was not immediately clear whether Harris also agreed to the TV debate.

US President Joe Biden withdrew from the race for the White House after a disastrous performance in the first televised debate of this election campaign on July 21. He then spoke out in favour of Harris as the new Democratic candidate.

Before Biden’s withdrawal from the campaign, another televised debate with Trump was scheduled for September 10 on ABC. This debate is expected to take place with Harris instead of Biden. However, Trump’s campaign spokesman Steven Cheung said last week that it would be inappropriate to arrange this until Harris was officially confirmed as the Democratic candidate.

It is now almost certain that the 59-year-old will challenge Trump in the US presidential election on November 5. Harris has already secured the Democratic presidential nomination in a party vote. On the second day of an electronic vote by the US Democrats, which began on Thursday, the US Vice President received enough votes for her official nomination, according to her party.
