US election campaign: Harris and Walz give their first interview this week

For weeks, Donald Trump has been mocking the fact that his opponent Kamala Harris has not given an interview since her nomination as US presidential candidate. The Democrat is now making up for it.

The Democratic US presidential candidate Kamala Harris and her vice president Tim Walz want to give a joint interview for the first time since their nomination. The US television channel CNN announced that a conversation with the two Democrats would be broadcast in Germany on Friday night (3:00 a.m. CEST). The Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump had recently repeatedly criticized the fact that his opponent in her new role had not yet given an interview, nor a press conference.

After US President Joe Biden dropped out of the race for a second term in July under pressure from his party, Harris quickly became the new front woman of the Democrats in the election campaign – with Walz at her side. In recent weeks, she has actually only appeared in a protected space of choreographed and staged campaign appearances. The highlight was last week’s Democratic Party convention in Chicago, where the two were put on a big show.

In the coming weeks, Harris will have to prove herself in situations that are not entirely under the control of her campaign team. This includes the interview, but also a planned TV debate against Trump in Germany on the night of September 11. Trump wrote on the Truth Social platform, which he co-founded, that he and Harris’ team had agreed on the rules for the TV debate. This includes, among other things, that neither of them is allowed to bring notes or cheat sheets.
