US broadcaster CBS provides Stephen Colberts "Late Show" a

The popular late night show by the US satirist Stephen Colbert will be discontinued next year. The broadcaster CBS will end the “Late Show” in May 2026, said comedian, known for his criticism of US President Donald Trump on Thursday. The “Late Show” is a fixture on US television, in the first quarter it was the most popular late night show in the USA with almost 2.4 million viewers. From 1993 to 2015 she was moderated by David Letterman, since then Colbert has been hosting the “Late Show”.

The 61-year-old recently expressed sharp criticism of an extrajudicial agreement of the CBS mother group Paramount with Trump. He called the payment of $ 16 million a “fat bribery”. Trump had accused the media group of subsequently dealing with confuse interview statements by the then democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris. Paramount strives for a merger with the entertainment company Skydance and needs the approval of the US government.

CBS said that the “late show” was “a purely financial decision”. She has “in no way” to do with the content of the program “or other matters at Paramount”.

Colbert emphasized that his end marked the end of the popular late night broadcast in May 2026. “I’m not being replaced. It all just disappears,” he said under the scans of the spectators.

The upcoming attitude of the “Late Show” caused disappointed reaction, critics pointed out to the time of the decision. CBS announced this for the program just three days after Colbert’s criticism of the comparison between Paramount and Trump, “who looks like bribery,” wrote the democratic senator Elizabeth Warren in online service X.

“America deserves to know whether his show was discontinued for political reasons,” added Warren. The democratic Senator Adam Schiff, who was a guest in Colberts on Thursday, commented similarly.

The moderator Jimmy Kimmel, host of his own late night show on the broadcaster ABC, also criticized CBS’s decision.
