UNESCO rewards the newspaper “La Prensa” for challenging Ortega’s dictatorship from exile

Managua- Within the framework of World Press Freedom Day, UNESCO awarded on Saturday its prestigious award to the press, Nicaraguan Diario who has resisted the systematic repression of the regime of Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo.

The distinction recognizes the work of the environment for “taking the truth to the people of Nicaragua”, despite the harassment, censorship, the forced exile of its journalists and the closing of its edition printed in 2021. Since then, the newspaper continues to report from exile, operating from countries such as Mexico, Costa Rica, Spain, Germany and the United States.

The Unesco/Guillermo Cano award ceremony will be held this Wednesday in Brussels. The award is named after the Colombian journalist killed in 1986 for denouncing drug trafficking.
