Chancellor Friedrich Merz does not expect a breakthrough in peace negotiations in Ukraine this week. “This is a laborious process. At best, it will only take smaller steps forward this week,” said the CDU politician after consultations with other heads of state and government of the European Union on the sidelines of the EU-Africa summit in the Angolan capital Luanda.
He added: “The next step must be: Russia must come to the table. And if this is possible, then every effort has been worth it.”
U.S. and Ukrainian officials previously jointly drafted a revised and improved draft peace plan for Ukraine at talks in Geneva.
