Former US President Donald Trump will be the keynote speaker at the annual meeting of the gun lobby association NRA on Saturday. His appearance at the meeting in Dallas, Texas, is the ninth speech that the right-wing populist has given to the powerful association. Trump, who is expected to run for the Republicans again in the presidential election in November, is a close ally of the NRA.
During his term in office from 2017 to 2021, Trump prevented significant restrictions on the right to private firearm ownership. The NRA has been successfully fighting against tightening of lax US gun laws for decades. The association supported Trump's past presidential campaigns with millions of dollars. Incumbent President Joe Biden of the Democrats, who is running for a second term, is in favor of significantly tightening gun laws in view of the many deadly gun attacks in the country, but has so far been unable to get this through.
