NEW YORK.- The American Amanda Anisimova eliminated Wednesday from the US Open to IGA Swiatekthe world number two, taking a perfect rematch of its debacle in Wimbledonwhile Jannik Sinner a semifinal against Canadian was scored without problems Felix Auger-Aliassime.
The New York audience vibrated as rarely in the tournament with the history of redemption of Anisimova, which won their first ticket to the semifinals of the US Open, which will play in front of Naomi Osaka.
In less than two months, Anisimova turned the humiliation suffered against Swiatek in the Wimbledon final, in which she was crushed with a double 6-0.
Playing this time with a field advantage, Anisimova banished the nerves that snatched her in that first Grand Slam final and returned the blow to Swiatek 6-4 and 6-3 in the middle of the joy of the 23,000 spectators.
“Returning from Wimbledon in this way is really special,” said Anisimova, a ninth world ranking. “I feel that I worked very hard to turn it around. Today I tried everything. I can do it.”
With a renewed mental strength, Anisimova remained firm when Swiatek broke the service at the first chance.
The former world number one only landed half of its first services and the powerful Anisimova made him pay attacking the seconds without truce.
“I couldn’t win today playing like this,” Swiatek said to the press, who denied any excess of confidence in the preparation of the crash.
“Everyone knows how Amanda can play. He did not play well in Wimbledon, but he will not always make the same mistakes or feel the same,” summarized the winner of six Grand Slam titles.
At age 24, Anisimova is exploding this season in the circuit after taking time out of tennis in 2023 due to problems related to mental health.
Osaka is back
Anisimova will be measured on Thursday to the Japanese Naomi Osaka, who later won by 6-4 and 7-6 (7/3) to Czech Karolina Muchva, semifinalist the two past seasons.
The former world number one did not get among the four best of the US Open since 2020, or a Grand Slam since 2021.
As in his brilliant triumph against Coco Gauff, Osaka showed again that he has recovered his powers.
The 27 -year -old Japanese is determined to reactivate a frozen record from the 2021 Australian Open.
After that fourth crown of Grand Slam entered a convulsive period in which he moved away several times from the clues to take care of his mental health.
At the beginning of 2024 he resumed the competition after his motherhood and the successes were delayed to the current North American hard track tour.
In this period “I learned that I love tennis much more than I thought,” he said before the press. “It’s like a video game. You take it, and even if you lose a level, you simply start again and continue until you finally earn. Sometimes it is a bit difficult, but it would not change it for anything in the world.”
The other female semifinal will be played by the Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka in front of his victim in the final of last year, Jessica Pegula.
SINNER AGAINST AUGER-ALASSIME
In the male branch, Jannik Sinner swept Lorenzo Musetti in the first quarterfinals of Grand Slam among Italians.
Sinner, who turned 24 in August, is the second youngest tennis player to advance to the semifinals of the four Grand Slams in the same season.
His harvest so far is two titles (open of Australia and Wimbledon) and a runner -up (Roland Garros).
In New York, five large trophies could enlarge his record and match his great generational rival in that race, Carlos Alcaraz.
To do this, the world number one will have to beat the Canadian on Friday Felix Auger-Aliassime And Sunday at Spanish Alcaraz or Serbio Novak Djokovicrivals in the other semifinal.
At an earlier crossing, Felix Auger-Aliassime extended a curse of the Australian Alex de Miñaur by beating it after four hours by 4-6, 7-6 (7/9), 7-5 and 7-6 (7/4).
De Miñaur, of Uruguayan Father and Spanish mother, crashed for the sixth time in some rooms of Grand Slam, while the Canadian celebrated the progress to his first semifinals of the US Open since 2021.
“It feels incredible. It has been four years, but it feels as if they were more,” said the Quebequés, who had previously eliminated the third sown, Alexander Zverev.
