US President Donald Trump said on Wednesday that he saw an agreement with Russia in the negotiations on the end of the Ukraine War: “I think we have a deal with Russia.”
US media reported on a proposal that is far towards the Russian demands. According to this, the United States could actually recognize the Russian occupation of the East Ukrainian regions of Donetsk, Luhansk, Cherson and Saporischeschja – just like the annexation of the Crimea peninsula by Russia in 2014.
According to the news portal “Axios”, Washington also guarantees Moscow that Ukraine will never join NATO. The United States could also lift sanctions imposed against Russia.
Strack-Zimmermann criticized the elements contained in the US plan, according to which “Ukraine never comes to NATO, but can become a member of the European Union”. This is “particularly bizarre, because of course the United States does not decide who becomes a member of the Union here in Europe”.
If all of this is actually the offer of the United States, it is “written proof: no, the Americans are neither our friends nor our allies in the future,” said the FDP politician. Europe must therefore continue to support Ukraine so that Russia did not end up success with its “brutal attacks,” she continued. “That would do something with us in Europe too.”
