Southern border of the USA: A woman wants to save refugees from drowning

Many refugees in the USA come to Texas via the Rio Grande, but the river is dangerous. Juanita Martinez tries to help them and save those drowning.

She is back at the Rio Grande, like almost every day. She is standing on the bank of the border river and observing the goings-on on the Mexican side. She is looking for movement in the bushes. For splashes of color in the dense green.

Is anyone coming over?

300 meters away from her, between walnut trees, soldiers of the Texas National Guard in olive green uniforms have positioned themselves at a fence. They too are observing the goings-on at the border river, with drones, motion detectors and night vision devices.

Is anyone coming over?

The soldiers want to catch the migrants. Martinez wants to save them. That’s the difference.
