Song used illegally for election campaign: Céline Dion takes a swipe at Donald Trump

Like many musicians before her, Céline Dion has had to make it clear that she would never voluntarily give up her music for Donald Trump.

Céline Dion (56) has now joined the long line of music stars who are angry about the unlawful use of their songs at a campaign event by Donald Trump (78). The Canadian’s official Instagram account then made it clear that Dion has nothing to do with the Republican political campaign: “Today, Céline Dion’s management team and her record label Sony Music Entertainment Canada Inc. became aware of the unauthorized use of the video, recording, musical performance and likeness of Céline Dion singing “My Heart Will Go On” at a campaign event by Donald Trump and JD Vance in Montana.”

This was “in no way authorized,” it continues. Dion also attaches great importance to ensuring that this or similar uses are avoided in the future. At the end of the post, there was a dig at Trump and his election team: “And anyway, THIS song?”, the question is asked. With the love ballad “My Heart Will Go On,” Dion famously provided the musical accompaniment to the sinking of the “Titanic” over 25 years ago. A fact that the political opposition also emphasized on X and made fun of with relish.

Are there any legal consequences?

The fact that Trump has used music by artists who have not consented to this in his race for the White House is nothing new. In the past, Adele (36), the White Stripes, Bruce Springsteen (74), Neil Young (78) and Elton John (77), to name just a few, have publicly expressed their displeasure and prohibited further use.

In Dion’s case, however, more serious legal consequences could be threatened, as the US website “Variety” reports. The reason for this is that not only was the song played, but an old recording of Dion performing “My Heart Will Go On” was also shown on the video screen.
