US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Friday accused Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky of lying about Washington’s demands for security guarantees.
In an interview, Zelensky had claimed that the United States was pressuring Ukraine to cede the eastern Donbas region to Russia, before closing any post-war security guarantees.
“That’s a lie,” Rubio told reporters. in Paris when asked about Zelensky’s statements.
“I saw him say that, and it’s unfortunate that he says it, because he knows it’s not true.”Rubio said after a G7 meeting.
“What was told to him is the obvious: the security guarantees are not going to come into force until the war ends“he stated.
Rubio clarifies Zelensky
“That It was not conditional on him giving up territory“He added. “I don’t know why he says those things. It’s not true,” Rubio said.
Rubio is considered a defender of the Ukrainian cause, but he has put Zelensky in his place when he has to.
Rubio was present in the Oval Office the day President Donald J. Trump and Vice President JD Vance were forced to reprimand Zelensky for his defiant and disrespectful behavior regarding all US aid.
