Roma coach is fired

ROME (AP) — The Rome fired the coach on Wednesday Daniele De Rossian unexpected decision despite the fact that the Giallorossi have not won after the first four rounds of the Italian league.

Ivan Juri, who previously managed Genoa, Hellas Verona and Torino, was hired to replace De Rossi.

Once Roma captain, De Rossi was hired in January to replace the sacked Jose Mourinho. He performed so well during the second half of the season that he was given a contract extension through the 2026-27 campaign in June.

“The decision is taken in the interest of the team, in order to be able to get back on track as soon as possible, at a time when the season is still in its early stages,” Roma said in a statement. “A sincere thank you to Daniele, who will always be at home at the club, for the work carried out these past few months with passion and dedication.”

Roma added that “communication regarding the technical direction of the team will be announced later.”

The capital club will host Udinese, the surprise leader of Serie A, on Sunday.

Juri, who has signed a contract until the end of the season, has driven Torino for the past three campaigns, taking them to 10th place in the first two and ninth in the last.

This is the first coaching change in Serie A this season.

After a goalless draw at Cagliari in the first round, Roma lost 2-1 at home to Empoli. Subsequent draws away to Juventus (0-0) and Genoa (1-1) left them with just three points in 16th place.

De Rossi has transformed Roma into a more attack-oriented team, in contrast to Mourinho’s defensive approach. But they have only scored two goals this season.

Roma will make their Europa League debut next week when they host Athletic Bilbao at the Stadio Olimpico.

The team lost striker Romelu Lukaku when a loan deal ran out, but managed to retain Argentine forward Paulo Dybala after sounding out an offer from Saudi Arabia.

Dan and Ryan Friedkin, the American owners of Roma, have been known for their surprising decisions.
