Hunter Biden bursts into a committee meeting in the US House of Representatives. The subject: Himself and his possible contempt for Congress. The president’s son is provocative with his appearance.
US President Joe Biden’s son, Hunter Biden, caused a stir with his unexpected visit to a committee meeting in the House of Representatives. During Wednesday’s hearing, which was discussing whether to formally charge the president’s son with contempt of Parliament, chaos broke out when Biden unexpectedly took a seat in the audience.
The Republicans accuse Hunter Biden of having in the past exploited his father’s important position as then-Vice President Barack Obama for business in Ukraine and China. However, no evidence of illegal actions has been provided so far.
Hunter Biden only wanted to testify at a public meeting
Biden had declined to testify at a closed hearing and instead offered to take the witness stand at a public session. Because he had refused the subpoena, the Republican-chaired committee now wanted to accuse him of contempt of Congress.
Republican Rep. Nancy Mace called Biden’s appearance on Wednesday a “PR stunt.” He should be arrested “here and now and go straight to prison,” she demanded. The meeting degenerated into a series of shouting duels. Mace claimed that Biden had previously not complied with the subpoena to testify out of “fear.”
Democratic Rep. Jared Moskowitz countered: “He’s here. He doesn’t seem too scared.” Moskowitz accused Republicans of being afraid of Biden making a public statement. He then read out a list of Republicans who had ignored summonses for the storming of the Capitol in Washington two years ago by supporters of President Donald Trump, who had already been voted out of office at the time.
Hunter Biden and his lawyers then left the hearing. Biden’s lawyer Abbe Lowell told reporters that his client was the victim of a “political crusade.” Republicans are trying to put President Biden’s administration in a bad light ahead of the presidential election in November. The incumbent wants to run again, the Republican candidate will probably be former President Trump.
President Biden has repeatedly publicly supported his son, who has had serious drug problems in the past. Hunter Biden is the president’s second son. His older brother Beau Biden died of a brain tumor in 2015. As children, Hunter and Beau survived a serious car accident in which Joe Biden’s first wife Neilia and their daughter Naomi died in 1972.
