ANDORRA.- The former player of Barcelona and current owner of FC Andorra, Gerard Piquéwas handed a two-month, six-game suspension on Wednesday for “mild violence” during a heated argument with a referee.
The 39-year-old businessman, who retired as a player in 2022, became embroiled in a dispute after the defeat of the Andorra 1-0 against him Albacete last week, in a Spanish second division match.
The referee wrote in his post-match report that Piqué, as well as other members of the Andorra coaching staff and squad, confronted the referee team.
The disciplinary committee of the Spanish Football Federation indicated that Piqué has been “suspended for two months for notorious and public acts that violate dignity and sporting decorum, based on the facts recorded in the arbitration report.”
He also sanctioned Piqué with “six games for acts that involve minor violence towards the referees.”
The president of Andorra, Ferran Vilasecareceived a four-month suspension, while the sports director, Jaume Noguésand several other members of the club’s staff were also sanctioned.
The referee explained that Piqué told him to “leave under escort so that no one attacks him” after complaining about the refereeing decisions made during the match.
“In another country they would beat you, but here in Andorra we are a civilized country,” Piqué added, according to the report.
The referee noted that, after getting into the vehicle to leave, Nogués told the referees: “I hope you have an accident.”
Piqué stated on social media last week that the club had previously sent a letter to the federation requesting that the referee, Alonso by Ena Wolfwill not referee any of the team’s games.
