Perdue recalls cooked chicken nuggets and strips over possible metal contamination

The food company Perdue recalled hundreds of thousands of nuggets and tenders (strips) of frozen, ready-to-eat chicken breast for possible metal contamination, the Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) reported.

The affected products are: nuggets Simply Smart Organic 22-ounce Breaded Chicken Breast Sticks; 29-ounce Chicken Breast Strips and nuggets Butcherbox 22oz Organic Chicken Breast. The recall includes about 167,171 pounds (75,827 kilograms) of the frozen, ready-to-eat products.

“FSIS is concerned that some products may be in consumers’ freezers,” the agency said. “Consumers who have purchased these products are urged not to consume them. These products should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase.”

Perdue Foods LLC said in a news release that “foreign material was identified in a limited number of consumer packages.” The FSIS reported that Metal was found in the productsIts presence was discovered after receiving complaints from consumers about metal filaments embedded in food.

“We determined that the material was a very fine strand of metal wire that was inadvertently introduced into the manufacturing process,” said Jeff Shaw, senior vice president of food safety and quality for Perdue. “Out of an abundance of caution, we decided to voluntarily recall all of these packages from the products.”

There have been no confirmed reports of illnesses or injuries.FSIS and Perdue said.
