Kamala Harris vs. Donald Trump: He announces a televised debate after all

The televised debate between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump will now take place after all. It will be broadcast by ABC in September.

US presidential candidate Donald Trump (78) has now agreed to a TV debate with US Vice President Kamala Harris (59) on ABC. During a press conference in Mar-a-Lago, the former president announced that he wanted to debate the new Democratic presidential candidate in September.

Donald Trump confirms TV debate, but gives wrong date

“I think it’s very important to have debates, and we agreed with Fox on September 4th. We agreed with NBC. We agreed with September 10th. And we agreed with ABC on September 25th,” the Republican candidate said.

The Trump team later clarified on X that the correct dates for the debates would be “Fox News on September 4, ABC on September 10, and NBC on September 25.”

Kamala Harris: “I’m looking forward to it”

In addition to ABC’s announcement that Trump has accepted the offer to debate Harris on September 10, Harris also confirmed that she will participate in the debate. “Well, I’m glad he finally agreed to a debate on September 10. I’m looking forward to it. I hope he comes,” she told reporters on the tarmac in Michigan on Thursday, NBC News reports.

Kamala Harris also addressed the announcement on X, writing: “I heard that Donald Trump has finally agreed to debate me on September 10th. I’m looking forward to it.”

She left the other two dates suggested by Trump uncommented. However, she is said to have told reporters on the sidelines of the campaign trail that she was open to discussions about another debate.

Donald Trump: “Pretty minor details” still need to be sorted out

In his hastily arranged press conference in the US state of Florida, Donald Trump also said that although his team had spoken to the heads of the television networks, they were still working on some “fairly minor details”, including the audience and locations.

The date for the September 10 ABC debate was originally agreed upon between Trump and President Joe Biden (81) in May, before Biden dropped out of the 2024 presidential race. Trump claimed on his social media platform on August 2 that his ABC News debate “is no longer happening because Biden will no longer participate.”
