A joint statement by the US-South Korea Nuclear Consultative Group also stated that a nuclear attack by Pyongyang against Seoul “will receive a swift, overwhelming and decisive response.”
“The United States reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to providing expanded deterrence to the Republic of Korea supported by the full range of American capabilities, including nuclear,” said the statement released by the White House.
US President Joe Biden had issued a similar warning in April, when he stated that a nuclear attack by North Korea It would “bring about the end” of the Pyongyang government, led by Kim Jong Un.
Five months earlier, Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin had spoken in the same vein.
Last year, North Korea declared itself an “irreversible” nuclear power and reiterated on several occasions that it will never abandon its nuclear program, which it considers essential for its survival.
Last November, Pyongyang successfully launched a military spy satellite into orbit and has since said that the device provides it with images of the main military sites of the United States and South Korea.
