MSC 2025 at security conference should "Hour of Europe" hit

In Munich, dozens of state and government heads come together for the security conference in February. The director Christoph Heusgen has a wish for his last conference.

The persistent Ukraine War, a difficult to predict US President Donald Trump, tensions with China: The handling of Europe with these and other challenges will be a focus of the Munich Security Conference from February 14th to 16th. “The hour of Europe should beat in Munich,” said conference manager Christoph Heusgen of the German Press Agency.

The EU will be prominently represented with Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, Council President António Costa, Parliament President Roberta Metsola, foreign commissioner Kaja Kallas and defense commissioner Andrius Kubilius. There are also numerous European heads of state and government.

“Transatlantic pillar” remains

The conference will also have a strong “transatlantic pillar” again, Heusgen promised, who will head the conference for the last time this year. It is still unclear who will represent the USA at the world’s most important expert meeting on security policy. However, participation by US Vice President JD Vance is likely. He was already a republican senator in Munich last year.

Putin’s government in Munich undesirable

On the other hand, it is clear who will not appear in the conference hotel Bayerischer Hof: Russian President Vladimir Putin and his ministers have not received an invitation since the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. “As long as Putin does not recognize the legitimate Ukrainian government, as long as he is not ready for real negotiations, I see no basis to invite him or representative of his government,” says Heusgen.

However, representatives of Russian non -governmental organizations will come to Munich. Among other things, Julia Nawalnaja, the wife of the oppositional oppositional Alexej Nawalny, who died in 2024, will appear in Munich.
