NEW YORK.- American launchers Tarik Skubal and Paul Skenes were recognized this Wednesday with the award Cy Young of the Major Leagues baseball, for his exceptional seasons with the Detroit Tigers and the Pittsburgh Piratesrespectively.
Skubal, 28, was chosen for the second consecutive year as the best pitcher in the American League in the regular phase.
The last player to revalidate this award in that circuit was the Dominican Pedro Martinez in 2000.
The Tigers’ “ace” was chosen first in 26 of the 30 votes of the Baseball Writers Association of America.
Your compatriots Garrett Crochet (Boston) and Hunter Brown (Houston) finished behind in the vote.
Skenes, for his part, unanimously won the National Award ahead of the Dominican Christopher Sanchez (Phillies) and Japanese Yoshinobu Yamamoto (Dodgers).
The 23-year-old Pirates right-hander is having a stellar start to his career in the Majors and in 2024 he was already recognized as the Rookie of the Year.
The only other pitchers who won the Rookie of the Year award and a Cy Young in their first two seasons in the Major Leagues were the Mexican Fernando Valenzuela —who won both in 1981— and Dwight Gooden in 1984 and 1985.
Skenes posted a 1.97 ERA and 216 strikeouts for the Pirates, allowing just 11 home runs in his 32 starts.
China rejects visa for Indian tennis number 1
Sumit Nagal, the highest-ranked Indian tennis player on the ATP circuit, claimed that China unreasonably denied him a visa to participate in a tournament in the Sichuan region.
“I am supposed to go to China soon for a qualifying tournament for the Australian Open. But my visa application was rejected without reason,” Sumit Nagal, world number 275, said on the X social network on Tuesday.
The 28-year-old, who reached No. 68 in the world in 2024, made his Davis Cup debut in 2016 and participated in the Tokyo Olympics in 2021.
He was eliminated in the first round of the Australian Open earlier this year and reached the second round at the same Grand Slam in 2024.
