MIAMI — A man stabbed a woman women in it Airport Miami International Airport around midnight Saturday, prompting authorities to evacuate hundreds of people as a precaution.
The woman was stabbed at about 11:30 p.m. on the fourth floor of Terminal J, outside the secure zone. Detective Angel Rodriguez, spokesman for the police department, police of Miami-Dadesaid the man also tried to push the woman over a railing, but she managed to flee. Officers recovered the gun and arrested the man without incident.
Rodriguez called it an “unprovoked altercation,” but police have not said whether the two people knew each other. The woman was hospitalized in critical condition with multiple stab wounds, police said.
Rodriguez said when officers arrived, some people were confused, thinking there was someone with a gun. Officers determined there was no firearm, police said.
Authorities have not yet revealed the identity of the victim or the attacker.
The attack occurred outside the airport’s secure zone, but a spokesman for the airport said that as a precaution all passengers in terminals J and H were evacuated and re-screened.
“We want to reassure the public that the situation is under control and the safety of our passengers, staff and visitors remains our top priority. Authorities responded immediately and the situation was quickly contained,” he said.
The case is under investigation, police said.
