Los Angeles Lakers confirmed this Thursday that their star, LeBron Jameswill be out of action for three to four weeks due to right-sided sciatica, a condition that affects the sciatic nerve and causes pain in the lower back and leg.
The 39-year-old has not played in any preseason games and had already missed the start of training camp due to “nervous irritation in the gluteus,” team coach JJ Redick explained.
“You have to play the cards you’re dealt. It’s a shame, but it’s reality. Nobody has had time with LeBron,” Redick said before the official announcement.
A loss that affects the preparation of the Lakers
LeBron’s absence is a blow for the Lakers, who expected to have their leader in the first games of the season. Under the current forecast, James would miss at least five regular-season games, depending on his progress.
Coach JJ Redick, in his first year at the helm of the team, acknowledged that the lack of shared minutes between the main figures – including new center Deandre Ayton – could hinder the group’s initial chemistry.
The “King” continues to make history in its 23rd season
Entering his 23rd NBA season, LeBron continues to extend his legacy as the player with the most active seasons in league history. Despite his age, he has maintained remarkable physical consistency, playing at least 70 games in each of the last two seasons.
During the 2024-25 campaign, he averaged 24.4 points, 8.2 assists, 7.8 rebounds and 1 steal per game, in addition to adding his 21st All-Star selection and being chosen to the All-NBA second team.
Immediate future and contractual projection
James exercised his $52.6 million player option for the 2025-26 season, but will be an unrestricted free agent next summer, adding excitement about his future in Los Angeles.
The Lakers, meanwhile, will have to adjust their rotation and depend on figures like Anthony Davis, Austin Reaves and the newcomer Ayton to maintain the competitive pace at the start of the season.
