Imprisoned Iranian Nobel Peace Prize winner suffered a suspected heart attack, her supporters warn

PARIS.- Nobel Peace Prize winner Narges Mohammadi’s health is extremely poor and her life is in danger after she suffered an alleged heart attack earlier this month for which she received inadequate treatment, her supporters said Tuesday.

Mohammadi, who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2023 for more than two decades of activism, was last detained in December 2025 after criticizing Iranian clerical authorities.

In February she was transferred without prior notice to a prison in northern Iran where she has barely been able to communicate with her family. The situation was aggravated by attacks in the region resulting from the war between the United States and Israel.

Health complications

Her legal team was able to visit her recently and found her very weak, pale and with notable weight loss.

According to the statement, on March 24 she was found “unconscious”, but only received care in the prison infirmary despite “symptoms consistent with a heart attack.”

Mohammadi, 53, has been repeatedly detained and tried for more than 25 years for her activism against the death penalty and mandatory veiling in Iran.

In February he received another six-year sentence for attacking national security and an additional year and a half for propaganda against the Islamic system.

He also went on a hunger strike to protest his detention conditions.
