PARIS — France This Tuesday he expressed his surprise at the criticism of the American president, Donald Trump, who accused Paris of acting in a “very uncooperative” manner in the context of the war against Iran, by prohibiting flights over its territory by planes bound for Israel loaded with military material.
Elysée sources said that they were “surprised” by the message posted today by Trump on his social network, in which he attacks France because “it did not allow planes bound for Israel, loaded with military supplies, to fly over its territory.”
“France has not changed its position since day one and we confirm this decision, which is in line with the French position since the beginning of this conflict,” the sources said without further clarification.
USA “will remember”
Trump also wrote on his Truth Social platform that France had been “very uncooperative” and that the United States “will remember that.”
“France did not authorize planes with military supplies headed to Israel to fly over its territory. France has been VERY LITTLE USEFUL against the ‘Butcher of Iran’, who was successfully eliminated!” Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform.
Paris had not publicly announced a ban on overflight for American planes involved in the war, unlike other countries such as Spain, which has clearly said so.
Earlier this month, the French military indicated that France would not authorize the use of its bases by US aircraft if they were involved in attacks against Iran, but would occasionally allow it if they were in support of the defense of French allies in the region.
These are mainly the bases in Istres (Bouches-du-Rhônes) and Avord (Cher), according to French media.
France follows in the footsteps of Spain
Spain will not allow US military aircraft participating in the war in Spain to use its airspace. Iran, said the Minister of Defense of the Pedro Sánchez government, Margarita Robles.
The far-left ruler has shown his frontal opposition to the conflict, which has earned him friction with President Trump, who warned the questioned Sánchez to cut all commercial relations with Spain.
NATO Agreement Review
United States Secretary of State Marco Blond, He said that his country will have to “review” the relationship with the NATO when the war is over Iran due to the refusal of Spain and other countries to allow it to use their bases.
“In a time of need for the United States (…) we have countries like Spain, a NATO member that we are committed to defending, denying us the use of their airspace and bragging about denying us the use of their bases. And there are other countries that have also done that,” he said during an interview with Al Jazeera.
The head of US diplomacy said that one of the reasons why the Atlantic Alliance is “beneficial” for the United States is that it provides “bases for contingencies” such as stationing troops, planes and weapons in Europe.
“But if NATO is just about us defending Europe while they deny us basing rights when we need them, then it is not a very good agreement. We will have to review all of this,” he said.
