Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris presented herself to Americans on Thursday, August 22, as the only option to a Donald Trump “without limits” and promised a “new way forward“upon accepting the nomination.
“On behalf of all whose stories can only be written in this great nation, I accept your nomination to be president of the United States,” she said during the Democratic National Convention held at the Chicago Bulls.
Harris stood before thousands of party delegates in prime time, with television cameras across the country watching, in a speech in which she portrayed herself as a leader.realistic, practical and with common sense”.
The US vice president raised the crowd at the political conclave by shouting “we are not going back,” in reference to the only term that Donald Trump has spent in the White House between 2017 and 2021 and who is seeking a new electoral victory.
Kamala Harris said she was eternally grateful to US President Joe Biden for supporting her candidacy after she gave up her candidacy for re-election,
“When I think about the journey we have taken together, I am filled with gratitude. Joe, your track record is extraordinary.as history will show. Your character is inspiring,” he added.
Harris also promised middle class tax cutsworking for a law that would restore abortion protections, resurrecting a bipartisan border bill that restricted access to asylum, supported by Biden, and continuing to invest in Defense to have “the greatest lethal force in the world.”
Surrounded by signs with her name in a festive atmosphere, Harris noted that Trump “He is not a serious manbut the consequences of putting him back in the White House are very serious,” among them he highlighted the threat to democracy.
”Imagine an unbridled Donald Trump and how he would use the immense powers of the American Presidency, not to improve your lives, not to strengthen our nation, but to serve his only client: himself“, he said.
Harris introduced herself to Americans as a middle-class woman who learned “not to be afraid” and who was always told by her mother, when she complained about an injustice, not to just stand there and do something, a mantra she recalled Michelle Obama in a speech this week at the Democratic convention.
Kamala Harris was surrounded by a group of women in positions of power dressed in white in homage to the suffragettes and closed her speech with the traditional shower of confetti and more than 100,000 balloons that fell from the stadium roof.
