Elections: “Offender”: Biden team attacks Trump in commercial

A few months before the presidential election in the USA, President Joe Biden's campaign team is toughening its tone. The verdict against Trump in New York provides a perfect opportunity for this.

In a new campaign ad, US President Joe Biden's campaign team sharply attacks Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump. The November election will pit a “convicted felon who only cares about his own well-being” against a “president who stands up for your family,” the video says – accompanied by footage of Trump in the courtroom.

Trump's so-called “mug shot,” the police photo taken last year during the indictment for attempted election fraud in the state of Georgia, among other things, is also shown. “In the courtroom, we see Donald Trump for what he is,” the video continues: a criminal who has been convicted on 34 counts.

According to the New York Times, the commercial, entitled “Character Matters,” is part of a $50 million campaign for the contested swing states, i.e. all those states that cannot be firmly assigned to either Democrats or Republicans. In a statement from Trump's campaign team, it was said that the video once again shows that the trials involving Trump are “sham trials” that serve the purpose of influencing the election.

What Trump is accused of

At the end of May, Trump was found guilty on all 34 counts in the trial for concealing hush money payments to a porn actress. It is the first time in US history that a former president has been convicted of a crime. In the worst case scenario, Trump faces a prison sentence of up to four years. It is more likely that the sentence will be suspended or a fine imposed. Trump's lawyer has announced an appeal.

Trump will most likely run against Democrat and current incumbent Joe Biden (81) in the presidential election in November. The conviction has not harmed him so far: In national polls, he is currently slightly ahead of Biden.
