Donald Trump praised Tim Walz effusively in 2020

US presidential candidate Donald Trump has already harshly attacked Tim Walz, the vice president of his rival Kamala Harris. In 2020, Trump was still full of praise for the governor of Minnesota.

Donald Trump has been taking aim at Tim Walz ever since he became Trump’s rival Kamala Harris’s vice-presidential candidate. One of the accusations against Walz: his handling of the riots in Minnesota in May and June 2020.

At that time, the death of the black George Floyd at the hands of a white police officer sparked the “Black Lives Matter” protests. Trump and his team now accuse Walz of being too weak and hesitant in his response to the sometimes violent protests.

Now an audio recording of Trump from June 1, 2020 has surfaced, which Kamala Harris’ campaign team promptly distributed on X – and in it Trump speaks very differently about Walz: “What happened in Minnesota was fantastic. They went in and dominated. And they didn’t hesitate to do so.” Trump even describes the governor of Minnesota as an “excellent guy.”

CNN confronted Trump’s campaign team with these statements. A “senior Trump campaign adviser” then told the US broadcaster: “The timing and context of these statements are important here. He was praising a governor who had finally done something after days of madness. So it wasn’t in real time. It was after Walz had finally done something.”
