Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) will take part in the summit for Germany. After the meeting, the Chancellor wants to take the press in the German Embassy in London in the late afternoon, as government spokesman Steffen Hebestreit announced on Friday. NATO General Secretary Mark Rutte and EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and EU Council President António Costa will also take part in the consultations.
At the summit, Starmer will teach the participants about his visit to US President Donald Trump, said Hebestreit. In addition, it will be about the further close coordination of European allies in supporting Ukraine and possible peace negotiations.
Strump had visited Trump in the White House on Thursday. Trump’s rapprochement course towards Russian head of state Vladimir Putin has triggered great concern in Ukraine and Europe. Europeans like Ukrainians fear that Trump and Putin could decide across their heads about the future of Ukraine and agree on a ceasefire agreement that would force Kiev into significant territorial concessions.
At his meeting with a strand, Trump again refused to say a concrete statement as to whether the United States would militarily shield a possible use of European peacekeepers in Ukraine. Great Britain and France have offered the sending of such troops. The summit on Sunday will be about “strengthening the position of Ukraine” – through further military support and “increased economic pressure on Russia,” said Starmer’s office.
In front of the summit, according to his office on Sunday morning, Starmer wants to hold a conference call with representatives of the three Baltic states, and receive the Ukrainian President Wolodymyr Selenskyj and the Italian head of government Giorgia Meloni on bilateral discussions. For the coming Thursday, the EU is also planning a special summit to Ukraine, in which Scholz also takes part in the lifting dispute. Last week, on the initiative of French President Emmanuel Macron, two top European meetings to Ukraine took place in Paris.
