Mikel Arteta signed a new contract on Thursday that ensures his continuity as coach of Arsenal until 2027.
“I feel very inspired, I feel challenged, I feel supported, and I am looking to do much more than we have already achieved,” Arteta said.
He Spanish coachThe 42-year-old took over as Arsenal manager in December 2019 and has transformed the London club into Manchester City’s main rivals in the Premier League, finishing runners-up in the past two seasons.
His previous contract expired at the end of this season and his name has been mentioned as a possible successor to Pep Guardiola at City.
“We are very happy that Mikel has signed a new long-term contract. It is a very positive moment and one that fills everyone at the club with pride,” said Edu, Arsenal’s sporting director.
Arteta served as Guardiola’s assistant at City before replacing Unai Emery at Arsenal, winning the FA Cup in his first season in charge.
Two seasons ago, Arsenal led the Premier League for 248 days but City managed to overtake them in the final stretch. No other team has been top of the table for so long without winning.
Last season, Arsenal took the title race with City down to the wire, eventually finishing two points behind Guardiola’s side.
Arsenal have not won the Premier League title since 2004.
“I feel extremely proud, very excited and looking forward to what may happen next,” Arteta said.
