New York contemplates candidacy for the 2042 Winter Olympics

NEW YORK.- The governor of the state of New York, Kathy Hochullaunched this Monday a committee in charge of evaluating the viability of organizing the Olympics and Winter Paralympics in New York and Lake Placid in 2042.

This committee has about 90 members and must work for approximately a year before delivering its conclusions and recommendations to state leaders.

“Today I have assembled a team made up of the greatest talents in the world of sports, government, business and community leaders from across the state,” Hochul said, quoted in a statement.

The purpose is “to put ourselves in the best possible position to develop a roadmap to bring the Olympic flame back to New York,” he added.

Lake Placid, host city of the Winter Olympics in 1932 and 1980, has facilities dedicated to snow sports. New York City, meanwhile, is home to numerous stadiums that can host ice sports.

A member of the state Assembly and member of this committee, Robert Carrolleven suggested in March organizing “big air” tests in a baseball stadium or cross-country skiing competitions in Central Park.

However, such a candidacy raises logistical questions, since the megalopolis and the winter sports resort are about 460 kilometers away.

The last Winter Games were held in February in Italy between Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzoseparated by 410 km.

USA welcomed the soccer world cup in the summer of 2026, with eight games, including the final, outside New York.

The country will also host the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles and of the Winter Games in Salt Lake City (Utah) in 2034.

The Pole, 9th in the “Race” before Ningbo, is in fight with Karolina Muchova (7th) and Marta Kostyuk (10th) for the eighth and last ticket still up for grabs for the tournament that will bring together the eight best players of the season in Indian Wells (November 8-15).

The Czech is not playing this week, while the Ukrainian is competing in Ningbo.

“After thinking it through, I have decided to withdraw from the tournament,” explains Swiatek, quoted by the Chinese tournament organization. “I have had a recurring problem in my left thigh for a few weeks and I think the right decision is to give myself time to rest and heal,” added the Pole, winner of six ‘Grandes’ in her career.
