MIAMI.- The election of Mía Dio as Miss Universe Cuba 2026 not only rewarded her performance on stage and the perseverance with which she returned to the pageant. Behind the new sovereign there is a history deeply linked to exile, the defense of democracy and the desire for freedom of several generations of Cubans.
The representative of Isla de Pino (Island of Youth) is the granddaughter of José “Pepe” Cancio, a member of the Assault Brigade 2506, whose members participated in the Bay of Pigs landing in April 1961. She is also a relative of Sylvia Iriondo, president of MAR for Cuba and one of the voices that for decades has denounced the regime’s repression and defended a democratic transition in the country.
This legacy allows us to understand the place that the Cuban cause has occupied in Dio’s public discourse. Throughout the contest, it used its digital platforms to make the reality of the island visible and paid tribute to the Ladies in White, a movement made up of relatives of political prisoners.
Mía Dio received the crown on Thursday night at the Dennis C. Moss Cultural Arts Center, in Cutler Bay, during the third edition of Miss Universe Cuba since the country’s return to the international pageant.
The gala began with a choreography starring the 19 candidates who reached the decisive stage. After the swimsuit parade and the corresponding evaluations, the group was reduced to 12 semifinalists.
Along with Dio, the representatives of Santiago de Cuba, Sancti Spíritus, Granma, Mayabeque, Villa Clara, Central Region, Ciego de Ávila, Western Region, Camagüey, Havana and Pinar del Río advanced.
The event then entered its final phase with the selection of six candidates. Mía Dio shared that stage with Daniela Reyes, Lizlauren Mosquera, Lorena Suárez, Yramsi Barcena and Daniela Espinosa.
This was her second consecutive presentation at Miss Universe Cuba. In 2025 she managed to place herself among the five finalists despite suffering facial paralysis a few days before the gala. A year later he returned, again with the Isla de Pino band, and completed the journey by winning the title.
Her confidence on the catwalk, performance in front of the cameras and ability to communicate her message allowed her to overcome each cut until she became the winner.
The triumph also has a historical dimension. The distinction remains in the hands of the descendant of a brigadier from 2506 and a woman whose entourage has maintained close ties with the defense of democracy in the Caribbean nation.
Dio succeeds Lina Luaces, who represented the country in Miss Universe 2025 and managed to advance to the Top 12 of the international meeting.
The new queen will now assume the responsibility of bringing the name of the largest of the Antilles to that stage. It will do so with a broad presence on social networks, the experience accumulated during two editions and a career that transcends the catwalks.
Along with the crown, Mía Dio will carry the legacy of those who have lived marked by exile and share the hope of one day seeing a free Cuba.
