Max Verstappen once again avoided any commitment about his continuity at Red Bull beyond this season and assured that he will be the one to announce any decision about his future in Formula 1.
In the press conference prior to the Belgian Grand Prix, the four-time world champion insisted that he will not fuel rumors linking him with other teams, including McLaren.
“I don’t want to come here to say yes or no about my future. I have already said many times that, if there is something new, I will say it myself,” said the Dutchman.
Full support for Laurent Mekies
Verstappen also dedicated praise to team director Laurent Mekies, who celebrates one year at the helm of Red Bull after replacing Christian Horner in 2025.
The driver highlighted the good communication he maintains with the French engineer and the atmosphere he has generated within the team.
“I get along very well with Laurent. We talk a lot both on the circuits and off them. The relationship he has with the team is excellent. Everything feels very positive and it is important to be able to discuss many topics with your team leader in an open and transparent way,” he commented.
Red Bull returns to the previous wing
Following problems with the new rotating rear wing, which led to back-to-back crashes in Austria and Great Britain, Red Bull will return to using the previous specification during the weekend at Spa-Francorchamps.
Verstappen explained that the decision responds to obvious reasons while the team works on an improved version of the new design.
At Silverstone, the Dutchman retired after an accident and described the car as “dangerous” on the radio due to its behavior.
A future that remains open
It is the third consecutive year in which Verstappen remains uncertain about his continuity before finally confirming his stay at Red Bull in the middle of the season.
Although he has a contract until 2028, there are clauses that could allow an early exit. In recent weeks, speculation grew after learning of a meeting between the driver’s representatives and McLaren, although the executive director of the British team, Zak Brown, recently assured that Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri will continue to be their drivers.
In addition, Verstappen has expressed his doubts on several occasions about continuing in Formula 1 due to his disagreement with the 2026 technical regulations, especially due to the greater role of electrical energy in the new cars.
