The elimination of Atlético de Madrid in the UEFA Champions League semi-finals against Arsenal left more than just sporting frustration: it reopened the debate about Diego Simeone’s future after a fifth consecutive season without titles.
After the 1-0 defeat in London, the Argentine coach was asked if he still has the strength to continue leading the red and white club. His response set off alarm bells.
“Not now, definitely not now,” Simeone responded, leaving uncertainty about his continuity for next season.
Cholo has been in charge of Atlético for almost 15 years and is the most influential coach in the club’s recent history. Under his direction, the team won two La Liga titles, reached two Champions League finals and established itself as a European power capable of competing with giants such as Real Madrid and FC Barcelona.
However, since the league championship won in 2021, Atlético has not lifted a trophy again. Although the club maintains a competitive presence in Europe and Spain, the demands of the fans have increased.
“We have grown enormously as a club, we are recognized in Europe and the world, but the fans want to win. Reaching the semi-finals is not enough,” admitted Simeone after the elimination.
The Argentine coach has also tried to evolve in football in recent seasons, partially moving away from the ultra-defensive style that marked his best years. This season, Atlético showed a more offensive proposal, although insufficient to overcome Mikel Arteta’s solid Arsenal.
Despite the European disappointment, the club found some positive signs during the campaign. Giuliano Simeone established himself in the first team, Ademola Lookman made an immediate impact after arriving in January and Marc Pubill became one of the team’s defensive revelations.
The season could also mark the closing of the cycle of historical references. Antoine Griezmann will leave for MLS to play for Orlando City SC, while Koke Resurrección’s future remains unresolved.
Simeone publicly praised both players after the European elimination.
“I hope our fans give Antoine the support he has earned,” he said of Griezmann. Regarding Koke, he added: “He gave a master lesson in how to play football at his age.”
Now, Atlético faces a decisive summer. The reconstruction of the squad and the possible departure of Simeone could mark the end of a historic era at the Madrid club.
