After the intense activity in Austin, Formula 1 continues its journey on the American tour with the 2025 Mexican Grand Prix as its next destination.
In addition to the activities scheduled as it is the tenth anniversary of the Mexico GP in the modern era, the tribute that Honda, current Red Bull Racing rider, is preparing with the only current Japanese rider on the grid, Yuki Tsunoda.
Honda and the beginning of its success story in Mexico
This 2025 marks the 60th anniversary of Honda’s first victory in the top category at the hands of American driver Richie Ginther, which occurred on October 24, 1965 at the Mexican track, the Autódromo Hermanos Rodriguez.
Ginther drove the legendary RA272, a car that was powered by a powerful 1.5-liter V12 engine and with which he finally managed to reach the top step of the podium, accompanied by Dan Gurney of the Brabham team and Mike Spence of Lotus.
For this year, the Red Bull rider decided to carry out complete maintenance on the original RA272 and take it out of the Honda Collection Hall and move it to Mexico City, where the next round of F1 will take place.
“It is a tremendous pleasure that the RA272 will drive again in Mexico, in the same place where Honda achieved its first victory, 60 years ago in 1965,” says Koji Watanabe, president of Honda Racing Corporation.
According to official information from Global Honda, Yuki Tsunoda has been chosen as the driver who will have the honor of driving this legendary car, during a showrun that will take place on the day of the race.
Tsunoda has said he is very excited to drive the car with which Honda began its success story, especially because he was also born in the Japanese country:
“Driving on the track where the RA272 was pioneered in Japanese motorsport history 60 years ago is a particularly special and deeply moving experience,” shared Max Verstappen’s teammate.
The RA272 has already been part of other important motorsport events this year, such as the Goodwood Festival of Speed and Monterey Automobile Week, however, the appearance at the 2025 Mexican GP is very special due to the history it shares with the Japanese motorcyclist.
