Weidel: "Putin has to move somewhere at some point"

After the Russian airspace injuries in several NATO countries in the past few days, Russia’s President Vladimir Putin has now received criticism from the unusual side: AfD boss Alice Weidel called the Kremlin chief to moderate. “I believe that Russia is also called to behave de-escalating and not to violate the NATO airspace and test the air defense systems,” said Weidel at a press conference on Monday in Berlin.

The chairwoman of the sometimes little Russia-critical AfD justified their words with the diplomatic efforts of the US President: “You shouldn’t put Donald Trump’s patience to the test. You shouldn’t let him lose his face in his peace effort.” Airspace injuries by Russia have “absolute potential for further escalation” and would “damage the United States to the United States after the peace efforts of the US President”.

With a view to Trump’s talks with Putin about a possible end of the war in Ukraine, Weidel added: “Somewhere Putin has to move at some point and we have unfortunately seen too little of that so far.” Weidel, who is considered a follower Donald Trumps, then described his meeting with Putin in August in the US state of Alaska as a “important step towards de-escalation”.

Most recently, there had been several injuries to the NATO air space by Russia. In the previous week, at least 19 Russian drones, sometimes hundreds of kilometers, entered the airspace of NATO member Poland. Poland and its allies then use aircraft and other means against the drones. The drones were shot down or crashed. On Friday, three Russian fighter planes entered the NATO airspace via Estonia.
