We cannot allow China (or anyone) to invade our elections

On Thursday night, President Trump confirmed what the average American has suspected for years: our elections are not as secure as Washington DC has led us to believe.

It declassified intelligence showing that China obtained the data of 220 million American voters — names, addresses and political affiliations — and assigned a specific unit to exploit that information. It released assessments proving that our own government had long known that our voting machines and vote counting systems were vulnerable to attacks from Russia, China, Iran and North Korea, and hid that information. Additionally, the Department of Homeland Security detected more than a quarter of a million noncitizens registered to vote in federal elections.

The situation is even worse. The CIA obtained reports revealing that the Maduro regime in Venezuela developed methods to digitally manipulate its own 2020 elections, altering the voting results in such a way that no audit could detect it.

Likewise, FBI documents describe a voter registration operation in Michigan during 2020, in which registration agents admitted to signing forms on behalf of other people, inventing non-existent voters and receiving payments with gift cards, through the application used.

This should alarm all Americans, and is precisely why the Republican National Committee is leading the fight to protect the integrity of the election.

For years, Democrats dismissed all of these concerns as conspiracy theories. However, President Trump presented the truth to voters and demonstrated what Republicans had been saying all along.

It is unacceptable that the electoral rolls are inflated with people who are not citizens and with deaths. It is inexcusable that foreign governments possess information on hundreds of millions of American voters. It is indefensible that Democrats repeatedly block the ID requirement to vote.

America is the greatest nation on Earth, and our elections should be the gold standard. The president’s message was clear: secure elections begin with voter identification, proof of citizenship, and accurate voter rolls. That’s why Congress must pass the SAVE America Act.

This common sense legislation is not radical, radical are the Democrats who oppose it. The polls are overwhelming: 68% of voters support the bill, including two-thirds of independents and almost half of Democrats. 81% support requiring identification to vote and 87% agree that only US citizens should make decisions in US elections.

It is shameful, at the national level, that Democrats continue to block security measures that much of the world already applies. India and Brazil link voter identification to a biometric database, Germany and Canada count using paper ballots. Here, however, we rely on a system of good faith. Requiring proof of citizenship and photo identification to vote, ensuring clean voter rolls, and strengthening protections against vote tampering are not only reasonable, they are the bare minimum.

Here at the RNC we are not waiting idly for Congress, we have already heard the president’s call loud and clear. We are leading the largest election integrity operation in the history of the Republican Party, with 160 active cases in 36 states. We fought and managed to overturn the New York City law that allowed non-citizens to vote. We defend Arizona’s requirement to prove citizenship before the Supreme Court. We discovered hundreds of noncitizens on New Jersey voter rolls.

We are also deploying a large on-the-ground operation to ensure election integrity in 22 key states: training poll workers and observers, recruiting lawyers, overseeing machine testing and ballot processing, and building the infrastructure needed to win. The SAVE America Act would only bolster these efforts and help ensure that the election vulnerabilities highlighted by President Trump never happen again.

We do it because Americans deserve to have full confidence in our elections. We deserve to know that our ballot is protected, that our vote is counted, and that the process is free of interference. That is exactly what the RNC fights for every day.

As President Trump said, “All Americans, whether Republican, Democrat, Independent or any other affiliation, should agree that we deserve the most secure, honest and fair election system in the world.” You are right. Secure elections are not a Republican issue, but an American issue. Congress should pass the SAVE America Act. And even if Democrats continue to block it, the RNC will continue to fight in every court in the country, because Americans deserve elections they can trust.
