Walmart is recalling cucumber slices sold in 34 Texas stores over fears they may be contaminated with salmonella.
They could contain cucumbers sold by Arizona-based SunFed Produce that were previously recalled and associated with salmonella infections between Oct. 12 and Nov. 15, Walmart said in a recall announcement posted Wednesday on the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) website.
The recall applies to products with all date codes through December 1.
Salmonella can cause fever, sometimes bloody diarrhea, stomach pains, nausea and vomiting. About 420 people die each year in the United States from salmonella infections, according to the Cleveland Clinic.
Walmart advised customers to throw away cucumber slices or return them to the store where they were purchased.
SunFed previously announced a recall of cucumbers potentially contaminated with salmonella. The cucumbers were sold between October 12 and November 26 in stores throughout the United States and in five Canadian provinces.
“As soon as we became aware of this issue, we acted immediately to protect consumers,” SunFed President Craig Slate said in a statement included in the recall notice.
