Victory for Patriarch Murdoch family is a dispute over media empire

The conflict was reminiscent of the TV series “Succession” – but now there is an inheritance for Rupert Murdoch’s media empire. The patriarch prevails – but that costs.

Media mogul Rupert Murdoch still managed to secure the conservative political orientation of his channels and newspapers for the future after a bitter family feud. The basis for this is a billion-dollar deal: his son Lachlan Murdoch gets the say in a new family foundation that the TV Group Fox Corporation and the newspaper company News Corp. To be checked – other offspring of the family patriarch are richly compensated for this.

Murdoch’s media empire includes, among other things, the enormously influential news channel Fox News and newspapers such as the “Wall Street Journal”, the “New York Post” and the British “Times”.

The patriarch’s fear

The previous family foundation was controlled by four Murdoch children: In addition to Lachlan, who is considered to be right, James, Prudence and Elisabeth also had the reins in hand. The 94-year-old Patriarch Rupert Murdoch had increasingly worried that the political orientation of his media could change after his death.

Above all, his liberal-minded son James had been publicly dissatisfied with the Fox News program, where, among other things, Donald Trump’s baseless claims were spread that he was defeated for victory in the US President election in 2020. Critics accuse FOX and News Corp of having contributed to the triumphal march of political populists like Trump with sensational journalism and the right -wing expression of opinion – not just in the USA.

Report: billions of bills to children

Murdoch Senior tried last year to solve Lachlan alone in control of the family foundation. The other three children, on the other hand, went to court in the state of Nevada and were able to stop the advance. With the agreement that has now been made, James, Prudence and Elisabeth give up their participations. According to information from the “New York Times”, you will receive $ 1.1 billion each (the equivalent of around 940 million euros). The foundation and the companies did not provide any information.

The new regulation is also a success for Murdoch’s ex-wife Wendi Deng. There should also be family foundations for their daughters Grace and Chloe, as stated in a message. According to media reports, Wendi Deng had long tried to admit their children to the previous family foundation.
