Venezuela still has no medals at the Olympic Games, but the diaspora does get them

Venezuela sum in the Olympics Paris 2024 saw a total of 33 athletes in 12 disciplines, including cycling, athletics, weightlifting, boxing, judo, wrestling, among others. However, none of them were able to bring home a medal, something that a Venezuelan athlete, a product of the diaspora who left the country, was able to achieve.

The United States won a silver medal in artistic swimming and in the group that competed there was a Venezuelan who now represents another flag.

The swimmer with Venezuelan roots, Daniela Ramirez, has it in her blood; she is the third generation of her family to compete in that style.

Of origin VenezuelanDaniela has not only managed to become an Olympic athlete, but she will return to the United States with a silver medal hanging around her neck, something that another representative of her tricolor flag could not do.

Daniel Dhers also celebrates a medal with another nation

Venezuelan Daniel Dhers celebrated a historic triumph by leading the Chinese BMX team to the gold medal at the 2024 Olympic Games. His pupil, Yawen Deng, aged just 18, managed to be crowned champion in Paris in the women’s park freestyle category.

With the techniques learned in her training with the Venezuelan rider, Yawen Deng led the competition with 92.60 points. American Perris Benegas (90.70) and Australian Natalya Diehm (88.80) completed the podium.

But how did a Venezuelan end up being key in China’s medal win?

“I’ve been doing this for 20 years and you meet different coaches and participants who see how you work,” Dhers told BBC Mundo.

The truth is that a couple of years ago, according to his story, in one of the international competitions the Chinese team approached him with a proposal: to become part of the technical team.

They knew Dhers had lived in Hong Kong for a few years and could help with the Olympic process. “I told them no, that I was still competing,” she said.

But the Chinese did not give up. And a year ago Dhers reached an agreement with them: if they let him continue competing, he could help in the process of improving the Chinese BMX stars.

This means another medal worked for by a Venezuelan, but which ends up favoring another country.
