In the USA, presidential candidate Donald Trump can look forward to a generous donation. In contrast, Bill Gates’ ex-wife has clearly positioned herself for his competitor.
US presidential candidate Donald Trump is receiving support from investors Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss. The twins said they each had one million dollars available for the right-wing populist’s election campaign. According to a report in the New York Times on Thursday, businessman Timothy Mellon donated 50 million dollars to a support organization close to Trump – one of the largest donations ever made in the US election campaign.
In contrast, billionaire Melinda Gates has spoken out in favor of Democrat Joe Biden in the presidential election campaign. “Women deserve a leader who cares about the issues they face and who is committed to protecting their safety, their health, their economic strength, and their ability to freely and fully participate in a functioning democracy,” the philanthropist wrote on the social media platform X on Thursday. The contrast between Biden and former President Donald Trump, his Republican rival in the November 5 election, “could not be greater, and the stakes could not be higher.” It is the first time that she has publicly supported a candidate for president.
Melinda Gates vs. Donald Trump
Gates this year left the charitable foundation she co-founded with her former husband, Microsoft founder Bill Gates, with $12.5 billion to spend on her own charitable work. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation donated about $1.8 million in the 2020 election, most of it to Democrats. In a CNN opinion piece Thursday, Gates further argued that Trump’s first term had put women’s health, safety and freedom at risk. The Trump campaign had no immediate comment.
