US State Secretary addresses with President of Guatemala Policy on Migration and Drug Trafficking

Guatemala City. – Migration and drug trafficking were the main issues addressed by the Undersecretary of State of USAChristopher Landau, and the president of Guatemala, Bernardo Arévalo, during the meeting held this Friday, June 13.

At a press conference, Arévalo said: “The working meeting has allowed us to review the issues of the bilateral agenda that we have between the United States and Guatemala, where critical issues are found such as the fight against drug trafficking and traffic of people.”

Guatemalan President also said he talked with the US Undersecretary about Guatemala’s collaboration for “The orderly, safe and worthy management of migratory flows. “

Another aspect discussed during the meeting was the American support for the development of infrastructure in Guatemala, as well as “the problem of trade and investments.”

The president of Guatemala announced the creation of a Special Command against “Transnational Threats”, that will depend on the Ministry of Defense. According to Bernardo Arévalo, this command will be a mechanism “that will serve to coordinate much more directly with the United States, Mexico or any other country with which we are working collaboratively in this regard, in the fight against transnational crime.”

The president presented to the Undersecretary Landau the text of the Regulation on the Authorization and Control of Precursors and Chemical Substances, published Friday at the Official Gazette. He explained that the regulations are a tool to combat drug trafficking, especially new precursors to make synthetic drugs.

Undersecretary Christopher Landau also met with Guatemala government officials and representatives of the private sector, and visited the Quetzal port, in the Pacific, where US soldiers work on the expansion and modernization of the terminal.
