US President Trump: Ukraine can join NATO "forget"

With harsh words, Donald Trump rejects NATO accession to Ukraine. He irritates with a disturbing statement why Russia attacked the neighboring country.

US President Donald Trump has given a clear cancellation of NATO accession to Ukraine and security guarantees in the United States. “NATO-you can forget that,” said Trump in the White House on Wednesday when he was asked about possible conditions for the end of the Ukraine war. Trump also ruled out security guarantees, as the Ukrainian President Wolodymyr Selenskyj again on Wednesday. As a “direct neighbor” of Ukraine, Europe is responsible for this.

Under Trump, the US government in Ukraine policy has carried out a radical turnaround: the United States no longer describes Russia as “aggressor” in the war and brought in a mosauf-friendly resolution to the UN Security Council. Trump telephoned with Kremlin boss Vladimir Putin and announced that he would soon meet him. His government started talks with Russia about the end of the war at the ministerial level, without representatives of Ukraine or the EU sat at the table.

In Ukraine and its supporters in Europe, the procedure of the new US government triggered sharp criticism and fear of being excluded from negotiations. The United States excluded a NATO accession of Ukraine and the restoration of the territorial integrity of the country before the start of negotiations. Trump’s predecessor Joe Biden, on the other hand, had given the prospect of NATO membership in the long term.

Donald Trump makes the wish for NATO accession responsible for invasion

Trump now blamed Ukraine and its desire for a NATO accession for the Russian invasion. “I think that’s probably the reason why it all started,” Trump said on Wednesday at the first cabinet meeting of his new government team in the White House.

Trump also confirmed a visit to the Ukrainian President Selenskyj on Friday. The USA and Ukraine had previously agreed on a raw material agreement that is to be signed in Washington.

According to a Ukrainian government representative, the agreement provides for the US and Ukraine to promote raw materials in the Ukrainian field. According to the Ukrainian president, revenue from the raw material deal should flow into a joint fund with the USA. However, the agreement does not contain a express obligation of the United States regarding Ukraine’s security.

Trump said the agreement was “a great deal for Ukraine” because it would come to the country. This creates “automatically security”, “because nobody will attack our people,” said the US President. Trump excluded security guarantees from the USA. “We will make Europe do that,” said Trump. Europe is responsible as the “direct neighbor” of Ukraine. “But we will make sure that everything goes well,” said the US President.

Selenskyj, on the other hand, renewed his demand for security guarantees before the meeting with Trump: “Guarantees for peace and security are crucial to prevent Russia from destroying the lives of other nations,” said Selenskyj in his daily video message. After visiting Washington, Selenskyj will travel to Great Britain on the weekend to advise themselves with Prime Minister Keir Strander and other European politicians.
