The White House in Washington has sharply criticized the Nobel Prize Committee in light of the awarding of this year’s Nobel Peace Prize to Venezuelan opposition politician María Corina Machado. With the decision, the committee in Oslo has proven that it “puts politics above peace,” said White House communications director Steven Cheung on Friday on the online service X.
Donald Trump claimed the Nobel Peace Prize several times
At the same time, Cheung expressed his conviction that the prestigious award belonged to US President Donald Trump. “President Trump will continue to make peace deals, end wars and save lives,” Cheung added. Trump has “the heart of a humanist and there will never be anyone like him who can move mountains with the sheer force of his will.”

The US President has repeatedly claimed the Nobel Peace Prize in the past. The 79-year-old claims to have ended several wars since he was sworn in in January, which observers see as greatly exaggerated. On Thursday, Trump reiterated his demand: By mediating a first phase of a ceasefire in the Gaza war, he has now ended a total of eight wars.
Machado dedicates award to Trump
The Venezuelan opposition leader, who was honored with the Nobel Peace Prize, dedicated the award to “the suffering people of Venezuela” and to Donald Trump. “This recognition of the struggle of all Venezuelans is an incentive to complete our task: to win freedom,” Machado said on X.
Venezuela is “on the verge of victory” and today, “more than ever, it counts on President Trump, the people of the United States and Latin America, and the democratic nations of the world” as its most important allies. “I dedicate this award to the suffering people of Venezuela and to President Trump for his resolute support of our cause,” the Venezuelan continued.
The five-member Nobel Committee, which decides on the award, met for a final meeting on Monday – two days before the announcement of an agreement on a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas and on the release of the Israeli hostages in the Gaza Strip.
The Nobel Peace Prize will be presented at a ceremony in Oslo on December 10th, the anniversary of the death of prize founder Alfred Nobel. This year, 338 people and organizations were nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. Last year the prize was awarded to the Japanese organization Nihon Hidankyo, which advocates for a world without nuclear weapons.
